Four Ways to Avoid Triggering Your Allergies

Many individuals hate summer and spring because they know they will suffer from teary eyes, runny nose and uncontrollable sneezes. Summer and spring bring the hay fever, although extensive research supports that some individuals can suffer from hay fever throughout the year. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, around 35 million Americans suffer from horrible reactions due to annoying airborne pollens. Companies also report that hay fever is one of the leading causes for poor productivity and missed workdays. A study conduced by Current Medical Research and Opinion reported that around 55% of employees experienced hay fever symptoms for an average of around 53 days. Such individuals were absent for an average of four days per year due to allergies. In addition, they were unproductive for around 3 hours per workday when they were suffering from hay fever’s symptoms.

The American Journal of Managed Care reports more than $600 million loss in total productivity annually. Employees are not able to perform well because the hay fever does not only cause the employees to sniff and sneeze. It can also result in sore throat, itchy and watery eyes, sinus infection, headache and other symptoms that are difficult to cope with. Experts recommend the following tips to avoid suffering from the allergies:

Take your medications beforehand
Do not wait for symptoms to build up before taking the allergy medication. The more you will delay taking your medication, the more difficult it will become for you to treat your allergy. Moreover, take your nasal steroid for 5 to 7 days to stop inflammatory response of allergy. This will stop congestion and constant sneezing. Experts recommend taking allergy medications a few weeks before the allergy season starts.

Don’t stop taking your allergy medications
Nasal sprays take many days to reach its full effect. So if you find your nasal spray not giving you, any relief then do not stop using it. Make sure you use it for at least a week. In addition, once your symptoms are under control that does not mean you can quit the nasal spray. Your allergies will return if you stop taking your nasal spray. If your nasal spray is not giving you, any relief then visit the doctor.

Consume an antihistamine at night
Antihistamines like Benadryl are stronger than newer drugs. However, it will cause you to feel sleepy and that it why it is best you take it before your bedtime.

Apply a prescribed antihistamine eye drop
Do not forget your eyes during hay fever. Applying antihistamine eye drops will stop your eyes from itching and becoming watery. Lastly, do not buy an OTC decongestant eye drop. It will cause rebound redness when you stop using it.
