The use of air conditioners increases tremendously when temperatures soar in summertime. Consequently, electricity bills also go up. If air conditioners are used effectively, the bill might be reduced to a certain extent. The following steps, when implemented will not decrease the AC efficiency, and will require less maintenance services.
The Thermostat
The AC uses more power if the temperature is kept below 78 degrees. Many people have a habit of changing the thermostat to a lower temperature. This has no effect on the time it takes for a room to cool. The only notable change is that the AC is now even more burdened than before. If no one is home, then make sure the thermostat is off. This can reduce bills by 15%. If this can’t be done then set the temperature three to four degrees higher. This will prevent the AC from being turned on.
Windows and Doors
All doors and windows must be kept closed during the day to prevent warm air from entering. This also keeps sunlight away. The curtains and blinds should also be drawn to provide insulation. The temperature can be reduced by 15 degrees if this suggestion is followed. In the evening, all windows and curtains can be left open to get rid of the heat. Less heat and warm air in the house reduces the effort that the air conditioning unit has to make to cool the house.
Ceiling or Pedestal Fans
The energy usage of a fan is much lower than that of an air conditioner. They are a great excuse for keeping the AC off for a certain amount of time. Fans are a great source of air if the climate is moderate. In warmer climates, fans might be enough to cool a room at night.
Ovens and Dryers
Cooking and doing laundry generates a lot of heat in the house. These tasks should be done early in the morning or sometime in the evening when the weather is cooler. If for some reason, an oven has to be used during midday, make sure you use an exhaust fan to expel the hot air out.
Dehumidifier
A dehumidifier should be frequently used during the summer in regions where the climate is wet. If there is no humidity in the house, then the thermostat can be set higher than 78 degrees.
Location of the AC
An air conditioning unit should always be positioned in a place where direct sunlight does not fall. This can be towards the north of the house or any place where the area is enclosed by plant and trees. Greenery, not only adds beauty, but also aids in maintaining a lower room temperature.
Lower Floors
The lower floors should always be availed in a multiple story building especially during the day time. The upper floors prevent direct sunlight from hitting the lower ones, which are generally cooler. The temperature difference can be as much as ten degrees.
