There are plenty of ways to save money on the cost of travel when going on holiday. Below are a few top tips to help you:
Book early - Trains, planes and coaches have a quota of tickets that they will sell at a low price. Once these have gone, the next quota will be a higher price and so on. Book at the earliest time possible for the best prices.
Alternatively, book at the last minute. This is ideal for people who don’t mind where they go on holiday or are open to suggestions.
Don’t forget to book airport car parking or car hire early too!
Plan ahead - Don’t pay for your baggage when you get to the airport. Plan ahead and pay for it online in advance. If you are taking a lot of baggage compare the cost between airlines to see if it makes a difference to your overall travel costs.
Travel out of season – If you’re willing to go on holiday at off-peak times you are likely to get a bargain price on your travel and accommodation. There will be less demand for tickets, which drives the prices down.
Travel in the early hours – The cost of travel plummets when you travel in the early hours of the morning for flights and in the late morning or early afternoon for coach and train travel. Different days such as weekdays (excluding Friday) will be cheaper too.
Some other ideas are:
- Look for special deals and discounts by signing up to booking agents’ newsletters.
- Research online to find the best offers.
- Book travel as part of a package deal or bulk buy tickets for everyone who’s going.
- Choose your mode of transport wisely. For example, traveling by coach can often be much cheaper than traveling by train.
